Why is it that doctors hail as what they do "practice"?

as they trained they don't need to practice!! do they?
A "practice" can also mean practicing your chosen profession

Anyway, for my sins, I got a Ph.D. from the Open Univerity second year, after writing nonesence about speeding up electrical power transfer circuits, oil occupied power transformers etc.

My wife, an NHS nurse in I can't can't spell it properly, but the kids departements, tells me I am a proper Doctor, and the Medicos only own an honourary title.

Well, what use am I to someone with a severe ailment ?
I might "practice" on making them better, & see what happens.

I cannot "practice" with 6MW of electrical liquid, or more.
It has to be right every time, or a big bang occurs.

My GP is a splendid bloke, and when I have a bout of pleurisy a couple of years ago, he gave me a course of anti-biotics. But I had to say to him "a prod of a mild steroid would allow me to breath properly right now" .......Gasping for air.

Ah, yes, he spake, I am only practicing

Hey ho, & on we go !

My pocket on this is that they practice because as a doctor, you are always learning, be it new technique, new illnesses, all of which may have arisen since they qualified.
It is not expected in the way that they are trialling things, more that they are always research, like you do when you practice something, you learn and improve.
As a 1st year med student i can already see that things adjust and theories and treatments change all the time, and this practice is the way of keeping up, be it through reading, observe or doing, it is all making them better and more complete doctors, which i essential. No, you're not clever. You of late have a very limited grasp on the English idiom. Try using a dictionary. One of the definitions of "practice" is

To work at, especially as a profession

I also practice good hygiene. That doesn't mean I haven't reasonably learned how to brush my teeth.

When you use what you have learnt you put idea into practice. It doesn't actually mean you still need to practice it simply means using your skills. i.e. not thinking about it but doing it.
Practice has a couple of definitions. In this case it refers to what one does within his/her daily profession. This is the same case as when lawyer practice law (it doesn't mean they're training, it's just a different usage of the word).

"fetch out or practice; as of jobs and professions; "practice law"
Practice...is what they do

Training kind is called 'practise'

It's a different word
Practice is the excercise of an art or profession.
